Dean's Award for Visual Art
Dr. Jeff Jarvis, Dean of the College of the Arts, and The Southern Quill award one outstanding artist $300 for their creative perspective and vision.​ This award is available to current Utah Tech students. The winner is selected by the faculty of the Utah Tech Art Department. Pictured is 2025's winner Brandon Raabe with Brothers.
Brad Barry Creative Nonfiction Award
​The Southern Quill awards prizes for excellence in creative nonfiction in honor of Brad Barry, a beloved and impactful Utah Tech English professor whom we lost in 2021. All currently enrolled Utah Tech University students submitting works to The Southern Quill are eligible. Prizes include $350 for first place, $250 for second place, and $150 for third place. Winners are selected by the faculty of the Utah Tech English Department.
Scholarships
Annie Atkin Tanner Poetry Scholarship
Each year, one student from the Utah Tech English program will be selected by the creative writing faculty to receive a scholarship of $1,000. Recipients will be chosen for the quality of their poetry writing in the classroom. The recipient’s poetry will also be featured in The Southern Quill. They will coordinate with the journal editors to select pieces of poetry that honor the spirit of Annie Atkin Tanner. Naythan M. Bell Fiction Scholarship
Each year, one student from the Utah Tech English program will be selected by creative writing faculty and the Bell family to receive a $750 scholarship. Recipients will be chosen for the quality of their fiction writing in the classroom. The recipient’s fiction will also be featured in The Southern Quill. They will coordinate with the journal editors to select a short story that honors the spirit of Naythan M. Bell.
