Since the 1950s, The Southern Quill has provided the citizens of southern Utah with an outlet for their creative writing and artwork—among them short stories, poetry, and photography. In recent years, this literary magazine, published by Dixie State College of Utah, has been expanding its scope by also accepting non-fiction materials, such as literature reviews and essays. The Southern Quill encourages writers and artists from throughout Washington and Kane counties to submit their work for possible publication. Dixie State College students have an extra incentive to submit their poetry, which The Southern Quill editing staff will automatically take into consideration for the Annie Atkin Tanner Memorial Poetry Scholarship Award (read more about the Award in the sidebar).
| The Annie Atkin Tanner Memorial Poetry Scholarship Fund Dr. Vasco M. Tanner established the Annie Atkin Tanner Memorial Poetry Scholarship to honor his wife in 1972. Since then, the Tanner family has continued their involvement with the fund, by choosing the first, second, and third place winners every year, based on The Southern Quill editing staff’s top ten recommendations. The editors consider all of the poetry submitted by Dixie State College students for the award. |
